Final game of the season ( post season friendlies) WHAT A JOKE .
By: nicholas | October 28th, 2007
Toronoto Fc travels up to Portand for a meaningless friendly against the TIMBERS. Although the idea of playing a USL teams seams intresting but the timing of the game couldn;t be worse or non-productive at all. If Coach Mo is using this game to eveluate talent, then it makes you wonder what he has been doing all year, not to know what he got and what he needs. I am sure that all us have heard the shopping list of 1 Goal keaper ( i thought we had 2 solid keepers for the mls left, K.stam and sutton are decent keepers ) 2 central backs , 2 midfielders ( i have been asking for a number 10 midfielder all year, i always believed that they need that creative influence in the middle to orchestrate the offense. ) and the infamous goal scorer ( i guess jeff and dichio just aint cutting it ).
I guess in the longer run the game will have some meaning but if this team comes back with a poor showing, it is not looking good for the team as a whole.
ANYWAY THE Game is In Portland as mentioned before at PGE PARK at 5 pm WST.
* If you guys have not heard a few weeks ago DON garber spoke to a Portland based radio station about the possible expansion of MLS to the Portland area and lets just say that the portland radio stations dont want minor leagues in the there town. link

Toronto did not look like a good side for much of the game. Stamatopolous was awful, and the Timbers made him pay for his mistakes. 4-1 was a pretty justified scoreline. I was amazed that a team featuring two US nats (Edu and Wynne) could look so bad at times; especially considering that the Timbers had plenty of regular players missing, at least three trialists in the lineup (including a particularly hated member of the seattle sounders), and a longer layoff since the end of their season than Toronto (about 40 days since they’d played).
It was cool to see a couple TFC fans show up for the match, though. That’s a long road trip and it’s always nice to see people travel to support their team.
And for the record, the host of that radio show is the same guy who shits on the Trail Blazers (NBA) on a consistent basis; just another home-team hating columnist (yawn), and not really indicative of Portland’s attitude toward soccer.

Stamatopolous is not a solid Gk. Look at the goals he gave up to Chivas, Columbus, and DC United. All from from poor angles. His command of his 18 is suspect and his teammates doubt him. Watch the replay of the final New England game if you don’t think this is true. Sutton? Nobody knows if he will even be able to play next year he’s still out with PCS. Even if he were able to play, he’s a very good shot stopper but his command of his box is even worse than Kenny’s. Moe is asking MLS to cut don’t on the number of Canadian players the club must carry. This is because all of the quality Canadian GK’s out there are with clubs in Europe or even established MLS teams. Moe wants an American GK.
Dichio is a fine player and he will be better next year. He is not a goal scorer and he lead the team in scoring. He’s a target forward he’s the guy that does the dirty work and sets up the goal scorer. Cunningham and he looked good in the one or two games they played together. But you need more than a pair of strikers.
I think Moe has done an outstanding job under the circumstances. Anyone who doubts his ability to read the game and judge his team must not know much about the game.

Toronto looked like they had no interest in being on the pitch. They couldn’t muster an attack at all and their backline was left scrambling throughout the game. I normally wouldn’t read much into the outcome of a game like this, but the Timbers haven’t played in over a month and they appeared to be the sharper and better of the two teams.
