O’Brien Named to the All-Star Team, but that’s It
By: Sam | July 10th, 2007
Remember that episode of MLS Extra Time when Greg and Shep pointed out a whole assload of TFC players well in the running to get a spot on the All-Star team? How every single Canadian (this one included) went and voted for the eleven Toronto players on the list? Yeah, well it was pretty much in vain. One single player from the good guys was selected. Kudos to Ronnie O’Brien, winning a spot thanks to being selected by Revs coach Steve Nicol, who’s coaching the Stars for the 19 July game against Celtic at the Dick.
O’Brien takes his place on the bench alongside Kevin Hartman, Eddie Pope, Pablo Mastroeni, Cobi Jones, Landon Donovan and Brian Ching.
That’s all fine and dandy, but I will not shut up about the fact that Jim Brennan should be there. He’s better than Jonathan Bornstein. Fact.
Otherwise, my prediction? It’s a real strong team (despite the lack of Canadian international defender/midfielder captains), and they did beat Chelsea last season, so let’s go with a 2-1 win, goals from Gomez and Johnson.
On a personal note, I’d like to apologize for my infrequent posting of late, not only am I enthralled by the U-20 World Cup (by 23 out of the 24 teams, that is. Fuck, Canada, that was embarassing), but my place is a madhouse these days and I’m just not on computer much. I’ll do my best! That goes for the France Offside as well.
For related and general blabber about the All-Star game this month, stop by the July Eh-to-Zed Open Thread.

i know that you know i have to say this….where the hell is dichio?!?!?!?!?!?!? and brennan??? i mean ONE player is all we get??? and hes on the bench, well thanks for the respect guys, we really feel the love here in Toronto. ok so now i have decided that i am supporting celtic fc during the all star game because one tfc player is not enough for me to support the “all stars” because some of them arent all stars its just politics.

Hey guys, at least you got a player. I agree that Dichio should have been included….but we didn’t get a single player down from Chicago.

ok firstly this will sound funny but Giuseppe i love your name:D ahhaha….back to the post…i dont think its fair that the all stars all come from say 3 or 4 teams. thats stupid because every fan wants at least one person from their team there just to rep. but apparently the fan votes dont count and we all get disappointed. i mean this is what im saying…chicago has a few good players (probably but i dont know) and they probably deserve a spot on the team.

ok i know i just commented but i thought this was funny: landon donavon is part of the all stars yet only 9.1% of the american public know who the hell he is. this is sad considering he has played in the MLS for 6 seasons i believe and in 2 World Cups but hey theres an all star:D
sorry its just i am very bitter atm

1. Very few players make the All Stars in their first year in the league. Haven’t built the rep with the four constituencies for voting (fans, media, players, coaches). Some players are there as much for what they have done in the past as compared to in this single season. Most TFC players are new so it makes it less likely their picked. I think Angel (with his strong scoring record and DP contract) and Toja (who has pretty much run the mid-field for the team that has the most points-and his hair might have helped the media remember him) are the only players new to the league who are all-stars this year.
2. Just because he wasn’t one of the voted in all-stars doesn’t mean Ronnie O won’t start. In fact it looks like he is pretty much the only winger on the list (or at least only non-geriatric winger on the list). The fact that there was pretty much no wingers picked in the fan vote and the fact that he was added to the roster by the guy who has to actually win the game makes him starting much more likely. It could be worse and he could have pulled a Nowak and picked mostly players from his own team who he was familiar with (DCU had 8 last year).
3. Dichio? With the backlog of strikers not on the list? Ahead of Twellman, Emilio and Galindo? Get in line.
4. The league is required to pay out all star bonuses to 32 players by the union. The alternate list in case of injuries is not out yet, but getting on that list means less travel and still getting the money. Best of both worlds.

Are you an MLS player? Who cares if they get paid still, we want to see them play

exactly… do really think the fans care if they still get paid? no i just want to see dichio, brennan and ronnie O play because they have worked so hard this season for TFC and deserve a spot on the team. I think having Dichio would work to the advantage of the all stars because we are playing against a european side and he is an experienced european player but hey thats just my opinion.

bluemeanies: Actually, O’Brien won’t start. The first eleven that they picked are, in fact, the starting eleven.
