Toronto FC to Aston Villa: Yeah, Thanks, Assholes

By: Sam | July 26th, 2007

tfc-villa.jpgThere’s our second friendly, folks, this time it was against Aston Villa of England. No scoreless draw like we saw against Benfica, no sir. First off, Mo decided it would be wise to stick David Monsalve (replacement keeper for Canada’s u-20 team - that should say a whole lot) in goal instead of Srdj. Well, thanks to his little mistakes and poor defending, Villa helped themselves to four goals, including three from Luke Moore, and claimed the victory right at the end of the match.

After going up through two simliar Moore goals before the match was twenty minutes old, Villa were exposed to the wrath of the Torontonianness. And they suffered. For a bit, anyway. Todd Dunivant and Andrea Lombardo notched goals in quick succession to bring the score back to equal terms. However, with ten minutes left, John Carew put the Villains in front on a simple tap-in, and Moore got his third in stoppage time. Final score: 4-2.

Should we be concerned? Perhaps just a little bit, the backline looked like pylons on all the goals, but thankfully Monsalve won’t be facing shots from MLS strikers anytime soon. Srdjan will be back between the posts (God, I fucking hope) against Chicago on Sunday.

The video is below.

I don’t really understand why they’re assholes. It was just a friendly and I’m assuming neither squad fielded their best possible team. Luke Moore is not a first teamer for Villa, because if he is, they’re in a world of trouble.

AVFC pretty much used everybody they brought during the course of the match, so I don’t think they were holding back in any way. If it wasn’t for the two bad offsides calls that pulled back one for TFC (Dichio) and gave one to AVFC (Carey), the scoreline wouldn’t have looked so bad.

Brian: I don’t think they’re assholes for winning, that’d be a pretty dumb thing to think. The title of the article just points out that Toronto was playing their first game at home since they invented sliced bread, and was mounting a comeback, but Villa killed it. Not to be taken *that* seriously.

well actually i was there and after villa scored their last goal the entire crowd was booing and so then the guy who scored took the ball put it above his head and started clapping to the crowd sarcastically. that pretty much gives us the right to call them assholes. the dichio goal was definately ONside and then the ref missed two handballs in the box by AVFC so TFC should have gotten 2 penalty shots so if that would have happened then the game could have be completely different. the officiating was awful but TFC put out a good effort…well everyone but the defence that is. anyway lets hope they can beat Chicago on Sunday and regain some dignity. AVFC played their first team goalie but he got injured within the first 30 minutes i think it was. i still dont understand why djakanovic (sp?) didnt start for TFC….i dont really like the keeper we had in net

I watched a good chunk of the game and, with the exception of defensive lapses, really thought TFC played very well, particularly in the second half. They definitely got hosed on those offsides calls, which was unfortunate. But at times they looked like a far superior team to others in the MLS - great passing, nice first touches, and strong finishing, which, IMO, is not standard fare in MLS.

There’s something I’d like to discuss here.
Why not a match Toronto FC versus L’Impact Montreal?
I think that if L’Impact Montreal were accepted into the MSL this match would become the Canadian Soccer Derby, since Toronto and Montreal are already cultural rivals (you know , Toronto being the major city economically and Montreal boasting its quality of life thing).
    Just think about it.

I totally agree Paulo, come to think of it why not have a mini-tournament with Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and the national team? That would be a kick.

Just because we beat you, we’re not assholes, its just we know exactly what we’re doing, we have just had a new multi million pound training ground and morale is very high at villa, we have a huge history, and as a supporter, the future is bright.
