2010 MLS Season Done and Dusted…What happens next for TFC?
By: Mark | November 23rd, 2010So that’s it for MLS soccer in 2010 (it ended a lot longer ago for TFC of course). The cup final was a pretty good time, with Colorado pulling off a 2-1 victory in extra time over Dallas to take the cup. It was certainly a different atmosphere from a TFC game, and there were a lot of empty seats at BMO Field (less than I thought though), but I enjoyed the match and was happy to see this season come to a close.
Here’s a couple pics I took on my phone during the match:

Moving Forward
Now that the cup has been awarded, everyone at BMO Field and MLSE can get back to their normal business, which is of course Toronto FC. We all would have liked to see TFC play in that cup final, but unfortunately we didn’t have a good enough team and the pieces were definitely not in place to make the playoffs this year. We have a faint glimmer of hope that something good will come out of the hiring of Soccer Solutions and Jurgen Klinsmann who are going to analyze the club and make some recommendations for improvements before the next season starts, but until then all we can do is look at the current squad and see what changes can be made.
Which brings me to the MLS Expansion Draft that is happening tomorrow, in which the new Vancouver and Portland teams joining MLS will get to scour a list of unprotected players from each team to try to bolster their new squads as they enter the league. Each team can only lose a maximum of 2 players from their unprotected list, so its not the end of the world, but I like to look at the list of protected players from TFC and see what kind of lineup we would have for next year. First, here is Toronto FC’s unprotected list (up to 2 of these guys could be gone):
Chad Barrett
Julian de Guzman
Gabe Gala
Nick Garcia
Raivis Hscanovics
Fuad Ibrahim
Milos Kocic
Mista
Joseph Nane
Amadou Sanyang
Martin Saric
Maxim Usanov
O’Brian White
There are some big names on that list including Barrett, de Guzman and Mista. The general consensus however is that these guys are too expensive for an expansion team to pick up right away, but based on this season’s performance it might actually help Toronto to lose those big DP salaries and start over with someone new. Barrett on the other hand would probably be a big loss for Toronto. He was making good strides this year before his injury and I think he is now an important part of the team. We’ve all given him a lot of flack in the past, but given the squad he’s on, I think he does a pretty good job. The other surprise on this list to me is O’Brian White. Here we have another high TFC draft pick that they are willing to unceremoniously drop after barely over a year of playing time with the club (he was injured most of his first season). I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team willing to take a chance on him to see if he can reach his potential. If Barrett is too expensive, White looks to be the only other interesting name on this list. Well, Hscanovics kind of jumps out at you, but not for the right reasons!
So, let’s pretend that all those guys are gone next year and take a look at the players we have left to try to make a starting 11. Here are the protected players or those immune to the draft (TFC academy guys are safe):
Nana Attakora
Adrian Cann
Jon Conway
Dwayne DeRosario
Stefan Frei
Dan Gargan
Ty Harden
Doneil Henry
Nick LaBrocca
Jacob Peterson
Maicon Santos
Based on these guys, we have a hypothetical starting 11 consisting of Frei in goal, Attakora, Cann, Harden and Henry at defense, DeRo, LaBrocca, Peterson and Gargan in midfield, and Santos at striker. That’s only 10, so I guess Jon Conway gets to play up front as the second striker! Obviously this is just for kicks, but if those are the top 11 guys we have on the team, I’m pretty scared for next year. There are a few good pieces to the puzzle in Frei, Attakora, Cann, DeRo and Santos, but basically all of the others did not really make a positive impact this year. I’m sorry, but I am of the camp that Dan Gargan is not the solid workhorse player that is going to get TFC into the playoffs. He was good enough to fill the gaps where other guys were awful, but that doesn’t make him a great player.
What do you think of the unprotected list? Is there anyone that you think TFC should have saved? Or, do you think TFC should try to get rid of anyone else on the team? This is the first step towards rebuilding the 2011 squad, so let’s hear what you think!

Protect Barrett for sure, $200,000 for I beleive 12 goals in 2011, not bad.
O’B will not get scooped up, he will be saved.
Not nessecarily dump anyone, we have a reserve league now, just bring in 1 striker, for depth, 2 to 3 creative midfielders, perferrably wingers, and top notch full back, and Morgan from the acedemy.

Oh, DP’s forgot that part. Resign DeRo, keep him happy, we do dump Mista of course, we are stuck with Guz. Leaves one DP spot which goes to either a winger or the fullback mentioned.
Thank you.

I’m surprisd at Barrett and deGuzman’s inclusion on the unprotected list. I can’t really see anyone picking up our guys that are available though (so we can lose up to only 2 then? Didn’t know that, thanks!)
Most important is going to be the coach. You need a good coach no matter what kind of squad you have, so that’s what I’m really looking forward to.
I’ll be checking the draft tomorrow even though I’m still confused as to the whole thing. There are still other drafts too right?

-

Thanks for your thoughts Conrad-I agree that wingers and fullbacks are needed badly. Assuming no one takes de Guzman, we are not too bad in the middle with midfielders and CBs, but some speed on the outsides would be great.
Sairax, there will still be a Superdraft where all the teams can pick up the college guys, and I think there will be a “re-entry” draft for players who are not happy with their contracts. That’s the one you sent me some details on a couple weeks ago.
We’ll see what happens and if anyone claims some of our dead weight in the expansion draft…

-

Well, would you look at that! Vancouver selected O’Brian White, who is the only TFC player to be taken in the expansion draft. I have to say I called that one, but I didn’t think it would actually happen!
This just lets me complain again about how crap the management of this team is when they give away their top draft picks for nothing tangible in return. Both the #2 (Sam Cronin) and #4 (O’Brian White) picks are gone from the 2009 MLS Superdraft. We still have Stefan Frei from that draft, but I won’t be surprised to see him get sold to a European team for a couple million. Enough for TFC to spend on another DP like Mista!
I’ll admit that White did not perform up to expectations, but if he starts getting a chance and scores some goals for Vancouver, we’ll all be kicking ourselves! (especially if it happens at BMO Field)

I can’t even PROCESS the fact that you thought leaving White unprotected was a bad idea. 4 goals in 33 games for a striker says it all for me. White wasn’t just bad. He was dreadful.
TFC was in playoff position when Barrett and Maicon got those horrible injuries. It was White’s time to step up and perform and he managed to be the main part in our totally useless offense. We were buried in the standings because of it.
Hearing he’s no longer part of Toronto FC was the best part of my day. And I actually had a pretty good day today

Ha ha, I thought the O’Brian White thing would stir up some opinions here! Thanks Diego, I know White did not perform last year and a lot of people are probably happy to see him go. It just drives me nuts that TFC keep giving away their recent draft picks and completely disregarding any of the research or planning that went into getting these guys in the first place. I’m not going to change anyone’s mind about White, but with the MLS reserve league coming in, maybe he would have had a chance to get some consistent playing time and regain the form he had before his injury. At the very least, TFC could have tried to include him in some sort of trade package in the future. We’ll see how he does in Vancouver – I just hope we don’t have another Jeff Cunningham situation here!

White was traded to Seattle from Vancouver

-

Wow, this just in – Vancouver turned around and traded 4 of their draft picks to other teams, including O’Brian White! He was traded to the Seattle Sounders for allocation money. Here’s a link:

Oops, you beat me to the punch Sairax!

Some other departures yesterday, and it looks like Klinsmann’s group is already getting involved:
