Canadian National Team get ripped off by referee and lose to the USA

By: Sam | June 22nd, 2007

He was not offside. Oguchi Onyewu passed him the ball. I’m not saying that Canada would have won in extra time, but they didn’t get that chance at all instead. He was not offside.

Agreed. Ridiculous call. A Mexican ref? Really?

A joke of a tournament (no offense but come on) just got it’s punchline.

God, and I remember how much I respected this guy in the World Cup, he did an excellent job (but I wanted him to do the final only because he had a Canadian linesman. He wouldn’t have made that call).

Like a random YouTuber said, why not just skip the tournament and have a Mexico-US game to save time, if it’s gonna be like this?

That was a shame. It was a good goal. I was pulling for the US, but I hate to win on a crap call like that.

I feel completely unclean right now. And not a little pissed off, anxious, and disappointed.

I don’t know if Canada would have won either, but, for my money, they simply outplayed the U.S. last night.

We just had a fantastic tournament, and again if we were going to play Mexico in the final my money would’ve been on them, but seriously, most people have never heard of Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume, and now they know them as the guys who maybe should have beaten the US, but didn’t.

bocanegra is simply a son of a ********. that is an obvious of a red card as ive ever seen yet the referee plays advantage and then gives yellow. both legs fully extended, and the ball is miles away.

what a great goal by canada.

i guess i wont comment on the offside at the end. same thing happened to tfc against dallas, but that didnt matter in the end, so it wasnt talked about. simply ridiculous. lets have a mexican ref a USA-Canada game. brian, youre right. a joke of a tournament.

The Ref was completely scared of the US. If it was ruled a goal the US wouldnt have any grounds for complaint because they saw that it was a legitimate goal too. Its not even the US team fault, its completely the refs fualt. He was making so many bad calls like in the free kick incident when Donavon was running up on the kicker before the whistle and the ref let it go. Or the insane tackle when the guy did a flip. He sshould be fined and suspended as a ref. This tournament is all that Canada has. We’ll never qualify for world cup. We’ve beaten Mexico to win before.

THis is why football needs video replay. Some people will say “no I like the element of human error” Fuck that! It works well in Hockey and once the call is made no one can dispute it cause it was caught by multiple cameras. There is no reason for not having it. whats wrong with reviewing it with cameras. How many times in world cup have horrible calls ruined games. it happens so much.

I was at that game last night…Canada did play pretty well, but to be honest with you, USA had a lot more scoring opportunites, and IF that was a bad call with the offsides, that’s the ONLY bad call that favored the US that whole game….Canada had a plethora of bad fouls and we’re the ones who took the red card…..I agree though…there’s this aching feeling of a “rigged” USA-Mexico match

honestly this was the stupidest game i think i have ever seen in my life. i am still trying to get over how bocanegra was still on the pitch after that challenge on De Guzman(sp?) and then that stupid offside call that wasnt even offside?!?!?!?!?!? if this were europe i would hear an investigation coming on. i do believe that canada deserved the win as they outplayed the americans throughout the match so yes i believe we could have won that game and gone to the finals. then the penalty that wasnt a penalty i would really like to know where this ref gets off calling such stupid calls that everyone can plainly see arent right. i mean come on we eeven have americans here saying that it wass BS so i mean that doesnt say much for the referee. this isnt the first time hes screwed canada over either. canada-honduras world cup qualifiers he calls 2 penalties against canada so that they tie honduras hence not qualifying for the WC. now if you screw up badly once i forgive you but when you do it a second time thats when i know that North American soccer is rigged and more corrupt than that of europe. so good luck to mexico in the final because i hope to go you tear he americans apart because karma comes around and i know that as much as onyewu denies that it wasnt offside IT WAS! so for the final of the gold cup GO MEXICO!

First off, the penalty on Onstad was a good call, of course Beasley embellished it, but who wouldn’t, and the ball was out of reach after that bad touch, but I’m not arguing with that. And did anyone else notice when Keller elbowed Gerba in the face after the umpteenth bad back pass from the US defense?

Bocanegra also definitely could have gotten a straight red, but a yellow wasn’t outrageous either. De Guzman is just tiny, so that made it look worse.

I don’t even think Archundia was that bad, but his assistants were horrible at calling fouls. Donovan could have gotten sent off for multiple dives.

    And Sofia-
I remember that game against Honduras, I was there at Commonwealth Stadium. It’s still fresh in my mind…

And on a similar note, I disagree with skillz that we’ll never make the World Cup. Case in point, this tournament! We were in the top 3, as Guadeloupe isn’t a FIFA nation, and if we play like this in qualifying, with Brennan and Sutton, I really like our chances.

I agree with Sam - World Cup takes 3 teams from CONCACAF. The US and Mexico are clearly the top 2 right now (in spite of last night’s match), but the place of third overall in CONCACAF is pretty wide open. Honduras, Trinidad and Costa Rica are all good teams, but Canada can play with them and is only getting better. I’d love to see them in South Africa.

3.5, actually. But I think for 2010 they’re having a North America-South America playoff, and I’d have to be pretty impressed to put my money on Canada (or Costa Rica, or whoever) over Uruguay or Colombia. But we’ll see what happens.

Anyways, who do you think was the man of the match yesterday?

For me, it’s DE GUZMANNNNNNNN who’s pretty much been the star of the tournament to some extent.

And Hainault was 83495347698 times better than against Guatemala.

The 4th place CONCACAF will play off against the 5th place from South America, so if we could get 3rd we’d be automatic.

I think that the offside call was wrongly called in favor of the US, but in defense of the Bocanegra he did not personally make the call but supported the lineman’s judgment on it. Any good referee would have done the same-stick with with the call and support your fellow collegue’s call if you did not personally see the play. If the game would have gone on I believe that Canada would have gone on to tie in OT, or would have been a toss-up if gone to penalties. Canada has much to look forward to, and has a good team, and much room for improvement and time for the world cup. Best wishes.

I believe you mean Archundia. But yeah, there’s nothing much you can do but support your linesman, from his view it was probably hard to see.
