CCC: Charleston Battery no match for the good guys, three-nil your final score and a second-place finish
By: Sam | March 31st, 2007
It could have been first, but those bloody idiots from Houston just had to go and score two goals in the second half of their match. Oh well. We still impressed, I guess. This is how the final match of the tournament went down, against the hosts, the Charleston Battery.
Alecko Eskandarian continued to show his offensive prowess, scoring a cracker of a goal in the third minute, thanks to Ronnie O’Brien’s umpteenth assist. Togolese international Abbe Ibrahim got the second, courtesy of Esky’s cross. Edson Buddle, much to Martha’s delight I’m sure, got the third and final for the boys in red. I was happy to be able to watch it, and I can tell you I was impressed with the showing. Our defense looked very cohesive and sound, with the three Bs (Boyens, Braz and Brennan) and Pozniak minding the line. We went with a 4-3-3 today, which I think is the best scenario at this point. O’Brien, Asante and Mulrooney were in the middle, with Buddle, Eskandarian and Ibrahim up front.
Well, all in all, I say success. Shaky start when we lost 2-0 to Houston, but hey, defending champs are defending champs, and it was our first match against a real team. The match against the Red Bulls was good, Sutton saved a penalty and looked better than I expected. However, the third and final match, regardless of the fact that we didn’t have a world-class opponent, was brilliant. Everyone was solid, as I said. It is lookin’ good, I tell you.

Stupid MetroBulls couldn’t hang on to a one nil lead. All they had to do was draw, or win, and we’d have had silverware before our first season even started. Damn you and awful side Bruce Arena.
