Cesar Velasco - Guest Speaker

As I have mentioned in the past, I attend the Schulich School of Business at York University. Luckily, one of our professors is a big footy fan, and he got in contact with TFC in order to have marketing director Cesar Velasco in to speak.
This is the audio file of his 97 minute speech + Q&A. He talked about very interesting issues, both during his presentation, as well as in the questions from the class afterwards. Regrettably, I was not able to record some of the final questions I asked him in the hall at the end of the presentation, but here is a brief summary of his most important points:
1. Columbus is lobbying the MLS to have their opening game of the year be at home against TFC permanently.
2. TFC would welcome Montreal and Vancouver into MLS, without worrying about competition.
3. The new jersey will be released in the first 10 days of December.
4. Mo is looking at 2 DPs (as we already knew). I asked whether this is done from a marketing standpoint (looking at the players background compared to culture in Toronto) or only for on-field success. Cesar was very clear that we are only looking at players from a soccer standpoint, as the team is already strongly represented in the community. Cesar confirmed that the decision on the budget (and therefore the DP) will be made at the board meeting on November 10th.
5. Friendlies - last year, we were looking in Europe, but couldn’t get any of the teams due to Euro 2008. This year, we hope to get European teams again. TFC loses money over these exhibitions, as the appearance fee is greater than the money which can be taken in from gate receipts (even with elevated prices for the exhibitions).
I’m sorry about the volume of the audio file, that’s as loud as I could get it. It’s audible, you just have to strain a little.
So the all-important board meeting is tomorrow! I’ll be posting as soon as we hear the results.

Apparently the Sun reported that the now-injured Iain Hume was considered for DP. A fine Canadian international, no doubt, but I really hope that TFC will set their hopes higher. I like to see this team break the mold from MLSE’s underwhelming signing policies.
