Concacaf Champions Cup- Canadian version
By: nicholas | February 1st, 2008There was press realease brought to us by the powers up at the CSA yesterday
The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to learn earlier this week that CONCACAF has accepted its efforts to include a Canadian team in the newly-expanded 24-club CONCACAF Champions League.
The Canadian Soccer Association, who, initially will work with the top-three professional clubs - the Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Impact de Montréal, will confirm shortly a new club championship to be played this spring/summer which will determine its representative. Toronto FC currently plays in Major League Soccer while the Whitecaps and Impact play in the United Soccer Leagues First Division.
The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced Monday that the new 24-team CONCACAF Champions League will replace the old eight-team CONCACAF Champions’ Cup as the annual confederation club championship. The champion - to be crowned in April 2009 - will represent CONCACAF at the FIFA Club World Cup 2009 in December.
Further details on the Canadian club championship will be announced in the coming month.
Canada’s last representative in a CONCACAF club tournament was Toronto Italia in 1976
So here is my opinion on the whole situation, the idea for a canadian cup was in the works from about the middle of the summer when the Canuck alliance met during the U-20 worldcup to discuss the possibility of having this mini-tornament. And to be honest i couldn’t be happier, because if the winner of the competition had only won a trophy that said canuck champions it would not get as much press or even the required tv ratings to keep the imagination of the regular viewer.
