DeRo Trials with Celtic, TFC Doesn’t Have a Clue
By: Sairax | December 28th, 2010
After some initial confusion, it is now clear that DeRo is currently on trial with Celtic without the knowledge of Toronto FC. Here is the statement Toronto FC have released:
“We were unaware of Dwayne’s plan to train with Celtic and we will contact them to understand the situation. Obviously, if there is interest in a short term loan arrangement by either him or Celtic, they will need to approach us and the League formally and we will consider based on what is in TFC’s best interest.”
This is great. Our star player, Canadian International, Dwayne DeRosario, is on trial half way around the world and no one has a clue. You’d think the manager would–oh that’s right. We still don’t have a General Manager. Well, the head coach should have a few word–oh wait. We don’t have a head coach either. Seriously, what is going on right now? It would be nice if we could hear anything that could give us a hint about what is going on in the backroom at TFC. I assume they are actively searching for a GM and coach and are just trying to tie up some loose ends. Then again, this is TFC, and I wouldn’t put it past them to sort everything out 10 days into the new season after we’re crushed on opening day by the Whitecaps.
As for DeRo going to Celtic, I have mixed feelings. For him, it would be a decent career move. Neil Lennon has expressed positive thoughts on DeRo:
“He’s a similar player to Shaun Maloney, he likes to play off the left and come inside. He is a skilful, sharp and intelligent player. Again it’s an opportunity for us to have a look and see what he can offer us, and he’s here for a week.”
Freddie Ljungberg is also on trial with Celtic, which is exciting for me as an Arsenal fan to see DeRo and Freddie together. Nothing is certain with regards to DeRo, but it seems that Celtic would be interested in a permanent move rather than a loan spell. Perhaps this would not be such a bad move for TFC. It would clear up cap space and we could bring in some really quality players in key areas, or even another DP. It would be difficult to replace his influence and his goals, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world. We’ll have to wait and see what happens after the trial.
As for TFC, I would really like to see them get their act together, or at least make it seem like they know what they are doing. After Chivas hired their new coach a few weeks ago, we are currently the only team in MLS without a coach and we have an interim GM seemingly making decisions on player transfers. For the management not to know that DeRo is away and in talks with another club is just unprofessional, disorganized, and embarrassing. It’s time to get serious. The SuperDraft is not far away and we need to be prepared. I’m hoping to hear something before the new year, but I’m not holding my breath.

A lot is being said about how wrong this is of DeRo and it probably is, but the fact remains this probably wouldn’t have happened with consistent and permanent management.
Maybe this will be the wake up call needed to not only find this management after more than 100 days (Klinsmann was SO worth the money we paid, wasn’t he… How about that pre-Christmas news we were promised..?) but also to find a reliable striker BESIDES DeRo.
Anyways, good luck to DeRo as he’ll need it. If Celtic doesn’t pick him up now… *gulp*

Hey Diego
Oy there’s still so much coming out I think I’ll wait a bit longer to put another post up. I’m reading now that MLS has told Celtic that DeRo has to stop training because he doesn’t have permission.
*sigh*

This story is crazy and I don’t know how to feel about it. I think I have to side with TFC on this one. Part of me says sell him and cash in while he still has some worth, but then that will be giving DeRo what he wants and will cripple the team at the same time. So frustrating!

An insult to seasons tickets holder. Management, players, future expecations, etc are all part of the product base. We must keep up with blogs and rumours to know about the product we are buying because the club doesnt even know what they are selling. Any well managed company, institution or organization is well aware of its staff. Well proof is in the putting and results a direct reflection of how an institution is run. Case in point…. MLSE and the TFC.
