Disappointment in Panama

In case you haven’t heard, TFC bit the big one last night and lost 1-0 to Arabe Unido in one of the crummiest matches I’ve seen them play. What a change from last week against Cruz Azul. The Toronto lineup was lacklustre (I don’t know if the rumoured feuding with Preki kept Mista off the field), the refs were ridiculous (2 phantom red cards), and Unido were beatable.

Can TFC really seriously compete in 2 competitions? Winning the Canadian Championship is one thing, since it’s held early in the season (although it will get tougher as Vancouver and Montreal join MLS and their teams get stronger). But now we have injuries to deal with and 6 midweek games slotted into the MLS schedule. What happens when you don’t have enough guys to handle it, but you still try to succeed in both? You end up sliding in both competitions, which is what we’re seeing now.

I think the team needs to seriously discuss the situation and decide which is more important to them and make sure they accomplish their goal. I say MLS playoffs this year to appease the restless fans, and CONCACAF Champions League can come next year. Are we really champions anyway?

Calling Arabe Unido beatable is giving them too much credit. They were awful, both in skill and in all their diving. Thet ref was terrible as well. It was probably the worst football match I have ever watched. That being said, TFC played terribly. We’ll show Arabe the business when they come to our house.

LaBrocca went studs up on the keeper…can’t think of an easier call for the referee

Good article. And I will concede the first red card. Just embellishing a little in my post for “dramatic effect”. I learned a little from the Arabe Unido players I guess, who were splendid at it, lol.

This game had nothing to do with TFC not being able to handle 2 competitions. I’m quite confused by your comment that the team needs to decide which competition is more important for them.

We played our 3rd choice goalkeeper. Mista travelled to Panama and then sat on a bench for 90 minutes, even though Barrett is now back and Maicon will likely be back soon (i.e. We probably won’t even need Mista on Saturday). Preki decided he would save bloody GARCIA, of all people. This decision was made a LONG time ago.

I didn’t see the game, but it sounds nuts. So I guess it’s all square in Group A then.

We have 3 weeks to wait until the next CCL game for TFC to see what will happen, but as Diego pointed out, it looks like TFC have already set their priorities.

Why are there 2 offweeks until the next matchday? I understand next week is an international date, but what about the week after that?
