Goodbye Mr Edu
By: nicholas | August 16th, 2008
Well I am not too sure how to react, to the recent news of Mr Edu impending departure from the mighty reds. This kind of reminds me of a certain number 15 who once played in the hollowed city of T.O ( But maybe I am just being a dramatic). But the news of Maurice leaving MLS for a Greener pastures (In this case the Blue side of Glasgow) has left an uneasy feeling in the minds of many TFC supporters, its like breaking up with your significant other, even though you knew it had to end at some point. But with the recent results, i guess TFC will have to learn to play without the talented volante de marca ( that is defensive midfield in Spanish)
When Maurice Edu and Wynne played in the Olympics, I secretly found myself cheering for USA, even though, they were the ones to knock Canada out of the Olympics. I cheered for the USA because the experience both players would gain from the tournament would only benefit TFC in the future, but it seams with comments like this
“ I love it in Toronto and the club and the city has been really good to me. I have aspirations to play in Europe, so when the opportunities come. I will consider then and determine if I they are a good fit or not”
His departure was not a matter of if but when.
With his decision already made, lets take a look at the club that he has chosen. Rangers Football Club are an association football team based in Glasgow, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Premier League. They have won 51 league titles, a world record, and have won more major trophies than any football club in the world. The club are nicknamed The Teddy Bears, from the rhyming slang for Gers, which in turn is short for Rangers, and the fans are known to each other as “Bluenoses”. The club’s correct name is simply Rangers F.C., although they are sometimes referred to as Glasgow Rangers for European matches to avoid confusion. ( wiki info)
The season began disasterously for Rangers as they exited the UEFA Champions League and European football altogether, after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Lithunian side FBK Kaunas. The first leg at Ibrox finished 0-0 draw but the return leg ended in defeat after a 87th minute header from Linas Pilibaitis. The Glasgow rangers have found themselves with an interesting predicament. They are forced to retool instead of arm up for the upcoming season without European soccer. Therefore loses of Carlos Cuéllar to Aston villa and Mike Weir to Kilmarnek, are only the tip of ice berg of potential cost cutting moves Walter Smith may move to alleviate the potential loses of not being in the UEFA Champions league.
Personally i would have preferred Maurice to have gone to a mid table English Premier side, such as Aston Villa, West ham or even Everton. But Ce la vi, he is already in Glasgow working out a contract, according to this report and i personally wish him all the best.
So to celebrate, TFC first rookie of the year, I will be counting down Mo Edu top 5 moments in TFC history.

You are comparing this to Vince Carter’s departure? Please. It’s not like Edu demanded a trade and then dogged it for half a season in order to get traded. This is clearly a step up for him and good for his career. We all knew that it was going to happen at some point.
And if you are making the comparison of how he was a fan favourite, Carter spent over 6 years with the Raptors before leaving; Edu was here for a year and a half.
