Hakan Şükür to become TFC’s DP?

By: Colman | July 14th, 2008

News reaching us this morning from the Bosporus is indicating that Toronto FC are about to sign their first ever Beckham Rule superstar Designated Player. To translate from this article, Şükür met with officials from Toronto FC last week and had a verbal agreement. He chose Canada for his daughters education and rejected offers from Qatar and the Turkish league. Word is it will be a 1-year, 4 million US$ deal. However, most of that money is coming out of MLSE’s pockets and doesn’t count against the salary cap, so who cares if how much Şükür is actually pocketing.

In favour
1. An outstanding goalscoring record of 1 goal every two games internationally, and more than that for Galatasaray.
2. No notable injury troubles throughout his career.

Against
1. His birth certificate. It was issued in 1971, and Mr. Şükür is 36 years old.
2. I will always have to copy the squiggly S and the umlauts on the U when writing his name.

But I am ready to make the sacrifice, as long as we can finally have a proven goal scorer up top. What do you think?

I’m totally hyped by this news as well. I’m a bit concerned that he wasn’t up to par to play for Turkey in the Euro2008 championship but even at 36 I still think he can be an asset to the team and a leader on the field. Worst case I think he has a lot of knowledge to pass along. I like the fact that he chose to come here (even if it was mostly for his daughter’s education) and we didn’t have to beg, plead, change our turf, or suck cock to get him.

AS a Hakan fanatic, I have to say im ecstatic that Hakan is coming to MLS. Even better, he’s coming to New York not once but TWICE.

I’m sure that Giants Stadium in New York will be packed with Turks when he comes into town….

Last year in the Turkish super league, Hakan scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists at the age of 37. That’s crazy good. Despite his age, Hakan takes care of himself very well, refraining from unhealthy foods and alcohol and working hard in the training camps. The only serious injury he has ever had was when in 2002, Hakan broke his leg in his very first training ground exercise with Blackburn Rovers.

The equation is very simple: Good crosses into the penalty box=great headers from Hakan=Hakan being loved by the fans.

Daryl would be happy about this. He wrote a great pre-Euro profile of the guy, and then he didn’t get called up for the Turkish team. If he goes to Toronto, maybe people would read it. :-)

Hakan is in the record books as the fastest goal scorer in the World Cup History. He is in the list of top ten active goal scorers in the World. He is a strong, imaginative, dependable and unselfish player. He has great personality too. I will drive to Toronto, Chicago, and Colombus from Detroit whenever Hakan plays. I am sure Hakan will not disappoint his fans.

If Hakan comes to Toronto, Toronto will be the American champions. I have no doubt that he will score a goal every single game.

Forget about his age; he still runs better than 18 year olds, as one poster above said.

One thing that is awesome about Hakan is his headers. In the most unpredictable situation, you suddenly notice that a goal is scored, then you turn right and see Hakan in the air, and here we go: Hakan scored one more header.
