Introducing the Annual Toronto FC Offside Tournament
By: Sam | July 28th, 2007Reader Paulo recently commented on one of my earlier articles, suggesting a Montreal Impact-Toronto FC friendly. Great idea, I don’t think anyone will disagree. But then I thought; why not make it even better? That’s when I got the idea for the Annual Toronto FC Offside Tournament. (Note: This name is only temporary. It will be cooler. Although that name is pretty cool) So this is what it is: Every year (you know, or whenever), Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Canadian National team (minus Brennan, Pozniak, Sutton, Nash etc.) play in a random Canadian city in a, say, two-week long friendly tournament, akin to the Carolina Challenge Cup, the Emirates Cup, etc. Winner gets a little trophy, none of this monetary nonsense. It’d be fun!
Goodness me, I might have to send an email to all these clubs suggesting it. Thanks again to Paulo for sparking the idea.
What say you?

Clearly we have it in our budget to host such a tournament. Nice idea. Doesn’t Canada already have the Voyagers Cup? Does Toronto participate?

I think the idea is great. If I were the god of Canadian football, and had the power to make this happen, I would. But I would suggest a few minor tweaks. First, I’d start it as a single weekend - two semis on Friday or Saturday, a final on Sunday. It’s way more realistic to be able to book the teams for a few days than a few weeks. Second, I’m not sure the Canadian national team should be the fourth team, especially considering how many of their players will be ineligible because of being on all the other teams. Friendly tourneys are ALL ABOUT the fourth-team guests from out of country. Imagine: a weekend of football starring Toronto FC, Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps, and special guests Inverness Caley Thistle from Scotland. Just an example, but a mid-level team from another league would be a good thing. Idea is awesome. Run with it.

Alright! If you become God Of Canadian Soccer Affairs tomorrow, Ian, you’d better keep your word. And yeah, you’re right about the invited team.
Bob: Yes, there is the Voyagers Cup, but Toronto isn’t in it. Of course, they could in the future, but don’t kid yourself: you know you want the Offside Tournament.

By the way, does your guys’ main Offside page show this article having nine comments?

And hey, I just did a Wikicheck, and guess what: The Voyageurs Cup is not a tournament, it goes to the team that gets the most points against other Canadian teams in the USL. I was wondering why the standings only featured two sides.

Well, I was actually thinking of the potential of a Toronto FC versus L’Impact Montreal match.
A true Canadian Derby similar to those soccer fans around the world are used to : Liverpool x Everton, Milan x Inter Milan, Barcelona x Real Madrid, Flamengo x Vasco.
I think there should be an effort on the part of L’Impact Montreal towards joining the MSL. (And an effort on the part of the MSL of accepting L’Impact in its ranks).
Just imagine that sea of Red and White banners and its chants against a sea of White and Blue banners and its chants.
Wouldn’t that be exciting?
The word “friendly” bothers me a bit , since there is to be a major feeling of rivalry (of course , security measures would have to be taken to prevent it from getting out of hand).Posted from
