Look what we got– Mulrooney! (The midfielder, not the former Canadian Prime Minister)

By: Sam | March 20th, 2007

mulrooney.jpgWith the Carolina Challenge Cup approaching, and our first MLS regular season game against Chivas USA approaching as well, the bureaucrats at Toronto FC went and got a darn good deal to solidify our defensive side. For a 2008 first-rounder and a partial allocation, we’re now one international defensive midfielder stronger. Richard Mulrooney, on-and-off USA international and former San Jose Earthquakes stalwart is here to bring about experience and leadership into our young crew.

Here’s a quick fly-over of what he’s done to benefit humanity since he graduated from high school. A Creighton U graduate, he recorded 51 assists in his four years with the Jays, earning himself a big fat All-American spot. Drafted third in the SuperDraft, it was with the Quakes that he made his pro debut, proving himself a fine young man in his rookie year, scoring a goal and three assists in twenty-four matches, as well as eye-opening play all-around. After becoming a regular on that side, he was selected to represent the USA at this thing called the World Cup in Korea/Japan, in which he warmed a whole lotta bench. Traded to FC Dallas a few years later, in 2005, he went and tore his ACL, which halted his season. He came back and showed he still had it, maintaining good play with the texan club and starting in the famous 1-0 win over Chelsea with the MLS All-Stars.

And now he’s with us. Good stuff! Now we just need a defender, and we’ll have a more-than-decent eleven to field against Chivas. Oh, it is so on.

Here’s a video of his first MLS goal, with the, ahem, Clash. Hope he’ll be packin’ more of that with us.

Great news! He can really play. I am starting to get very optimistic about the season.

Hey, Mulrooney’s solid! We used to watch him play (in San Jose) and my 10-year old nephew constantly yelled at him: “GET IN THERE BALONEY! PASS THE BALL, BALONEY!”

He really was one of the better guys on the field, despite a lack of stats. If he’s recovered, he should make some noise in Toronto.

Congrats on this one. If his body holds together - and it did last year, right? - y’all picked up a damn good player.
