Question of the Week?
By: nicholas | October 10th, 2007
So i was just surfing the web today and a little gem caught my eye … There has been rumours going around that, MLS would be going to a single table system for the 2008 season.
So the Question of the Week is:
Would you prefer for the MLS to go to a single table format with or without a playoff or would you like the MLS to continue with the status quo?

Call me old fashioned, I like the system the way it is. I figure that 8 teams making the playoffs will take care of itself as the league expands.

Call me REALLY old fashioned, I like the system the way it is everywhere else in the world. I know it says more about me than about the MLS, but conference separation just makes me angry. I want to see a table for the US league like with every other league. I also really hope that someday they can do what many other leagues don’t and model their season structure on the EPL. Everyone plays everyone else the same number of times, home and away. It’s the only fair way. But back to the point, I am four-square in favor of a single table.

No brainer…Single table. However, MLS has logistical issues (San Jose to New England to Houston to Toronto & add in Seattle?) that the majority of the leagues around the world do not face. A solid arguement can certainly be made for 2 (perhaps even more as the league reaches 20 teams) conferences thereby enabling more of a regional competition - read cost effectiveness, rivalries, easier on players bodies, etc.

I like single table…if for no other reason than it’s the way the rest of the world does it. We could use all the help we can get being on par with international soccer.

Next year MLS with conferences will have 32 games (3 times versus 6 in conference teams= 18 and 7 times vs other conference teams= 14; 18+14= 32). Going single table either means home and away with 26 games (13 x 2= 26) or 3 game lopsided series with 39 games (13 x 3= 39) resulting in half the teams having one more home game than the other half or add one more to mimic this years western conference ‘rivalry’ 4th game. 26 games is very short and 39 would be the longest MLS season yet. Keep with the long term plan of going single table 30 games when we hit 16 teams.

Yeah, single table. For me, simply because it’s easier to follow the standings!

single table for sure. The more teams that enter the league the more games will get played through the home and away format. start selling the supporters shield as something worth having; i would not be surprised if many mls fans even know what it is. the cup should then be a tournament at the end of the season; wow then we have teams playing for the triple and fans would actually care. right now the teams are all worrying about either just getting into the playoffs or getting ready for next season by trying out young talent; that is what the offseason is for, that is why you tour your club and play in preseason tournaments or abroad. as much as the league would like parody it sucks. having every team be just mediocre or a little better then mediocre is stupid. it is funny that soccer has long been considered the communist sport and football the american sport; yet football thrives on the communist ideal of equality and now soccer buys into it as well. their is a reason why major american investors are in england for premiere and even championship level teams; the best teams fight it out and spend money doing it. mls will never get to a second level league until we start doing this properly; d.c.united proved that last week in mexico!

I kind of like the incorporation of other U.S. sports in MLS. I like a 2 conference system here, but however I hope they don’t do the whole divisions as well. The one big plus is logistics. Other countries separation between cities is a lot less than in U.S., so the single table system works well there. In a 20 team system you can have a good system. Play 9 teams in your conference twice (18 games). Then, play 10 teams in other conference once (10 games). Thats 28 games. Switch between home and away each year for out of conference play. And if they really wanted to promote inter-league cup competitions, they could have 2 home and 2 away games for the big rivalries (e.g. RSL vs Colorado (Rocky Mountain Cup), DC vs RBNY (Atlantic Cup) possibly a Toronto vs Montral in the future (Maple Leaf Cup)). This would add up to 30 games for each team. I like the playoff format now to be applied as well. Top 2 teams in each conference, then top 4 teams from both conferences.

I never thought I’d write (or say) this, but I’m going with the playoffs. I think it was Craig who helped me see the light. At the same time, I’d shrink Craig’s playoff pool, even as I have to admit that in a 20-team league, eight teams making the playoffs wouldn’t look f-ing ridiculous as it does with 13 teams. Fundamentally, though, I like how baseball, the most patriotic of all American sports, limits the post-season party to a few teams. I’d go with a four-team post-season, two from each conference. We’re looking for the best of the best, right?

rumour mill: alessandro del piero to TFC in June 2008 on free transfer because his contract with juve expires in june 08….

TFC is losing so many games that I think that perhaps there´s something wrong with its reward system (on most teams the plays get some extra cash in case they win).

MLS should bring in the USL as our version of the Championship and go to a single table format with relegation and promotion and the whole bit.

I was thinking the exact same thing as Jacob. I like the idea of relegation and promotion and I like the idea of a single table format.

There are not enough good players in North America to justify merging the leagues. Besides, if that happened, TFC would likely find itself in last place in the USL, the way they have been playing this year.
Wait until next week, when TFC plays portland. Wanna bet even that team beats us…and we won’t score any goals, and Lombardo will finally score one, but it will be an own goal.Posted from

Del Piero with TFC? You have got to be kidding. He would rather swallow poison than play for this team. He is filthy rich, whether he plays soccer or retires. Why on earth would he leave Italy to come to Toronto? He told the Italian national team coach he would not play for the national team unless he was guaranteed a role of starting striker. Not that he is arrogant, but he has already proven himself at that level. Joining mls, and TFC in particular, would be like a brain surgeon leaving his career for a job cleaning fish.

Savo Milosevic is in Toronto for a tryout. Another 34 year old looking for work. He could ask Samuel for the key to his trailer when Colin is booted out of town.

What about another tournament , cup-style , with games taking place at mid-week?
Perhaps even a Canadian Cup (like the FA Cup). The winner would play the MLS champion. (Just a thought).
It is strange when Canadian soccer teams don´t play each other.
Is there not a desire to show those French-Canadians which Canadian team is the best?Posted from

About the question at hand : a single table would only work if there were relegation and promotion.
Don´t know if the MLS is ready for that.Posted from
