Recent Happenings in the World of TFC
By: Mark | December 17th, 2009
My posts have been a little few and far between lately – since the end of the MLS season there hasn’t been much action around Toronto FC, other than the hiring of a new coach. But there are a few tidbits of news I thought I’d share:
Goodbye Guevara – Attacking midfielder Amado Guevara has left Toronto FC and signed a 2-year contract with the Honduran club Motagua. I guess whatever issues he and Preki had at Chivas USA couldn’t be resolved, but best wishes to Amado anyway. He was a very exciting player at times for Toronto and scored some crucial goals. His spectacular free kick in Montreal en route to winning the Canadian Championship will stick in my mind for a long time.
No Football at BMO Field (only the soccer kind) – All the TFC fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the CFL has not approved the use of BMO Field for the Toronto Argos for next year. The dimensions are not right for CFL football, and who knows, maybe they were worried about crazy soccer fans showing up at the Argos games and causing trouble. So rest assured, you won’t need to watch games on a field that looks like this:

Turf Construction Underway - Speaking of BMO Field, the much maligned field turf has now been removed, and construction is going ahead full-steam for the new drainage system and all the other good stuff that will give us a real grass turf for next year. We can all expect lots more goals, faster running, and just general awesomeness from the TFC players on the new grass! (OK, maybe that’s a bit much to expect, but it will be exciting at least to see how the team performs on the new turf). There’s some sweet slideshows of the construction process on the Toronto FC website here and here.
Other news: It turns out TFC have also not renewed the contracts for Pablo Vitti and Lesly Fellinga either. Those off-season changes are afoot! Former coach John Carver has taken a job coaching English Championship side Plymouth Argyle. And Toronto has made a few more coaching changes as well, including the loss of Paul Winsper for a new job with Nike.
Well that’s it for now. Hope everyone has a great holiday and doesn’t have too much withdrawal symptoms while your various soccer leagues take a winter break. Looking forward to 2010 and hoping for a great Toronto FC season next year!
