Who is the Reds Greatest Rival?
By: Jon | July 24th, 2009

After a less then entertaining match against a B-team from South America, I was left asking myself…¨Why are we doing this right in the middle of the season?¨ as well as ¨What on God’s green earth is the Carlsberg Cup?¨ I’m sorry if I sound overly negative but the results speak for themselves. 0-0 we loose in penalties. Painful. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy Boca and River. Surely one of the greatest rivalries of all time. Both teams are well equipped with fantastic players. None of them, though, showed up at BMO. I just think it would have been a little bit more entertaining if it was an A-squad.

One growing rivalry that does interest me right now is the one between our beloved and the Columbus Crew. Saturday they face off in Columbus for the Trillium Cup (So named after the official flower in their respective province/states.) We drew our last two games against them but this time should be different. The Crew our strong and they are going on a 19 game unbeaten streak at home but they will be out 4 of there top players (Rogers, Marshall (Gold Cup) and maybe Schelloto, Moreno (Injury)). The Reds have been good lately and hopefully they can bring this momentum right into Saturdays match. Being Columbus out of its best defender I would love to see them take it right down there throat.
It’s a good rivalry for the Trillium Cup and sure to grow. But is Columbus our greatest rival? We are a bit young and I can’t really think of anyone else in MLS…maybe Chicago? We’ll have to see what happens with Vancouver but…there so far away. Montréal is on the tip of my tongue but…there not even in the same league. If Montreal does jump in I don’t think it will take long before you see the fiercest rivalry in MLS. I leave this one open ended though… Who is the Reds Greatest Rival?
How about the Frenchys?

I love the fact that you refer to River Plate as “a B team from South America” . . . . ouch. Just don’t put Boca in the same category.
My pick for your worst rival? Montreal. No heat for MLS yet. But it will pick up.

I’ve always thought the Reds and Astros have had a pretty good rivalry, but I wouldn’t put it in the “greatest” rival category.

Barrett and VItti are their own worst enemy.

How about a vote for Vancouver? Two losses, a win and a draw to them. A controversial NCC title chase. And come 2011, a great rivalry in MLS.

When Montreal joins MLS, that will be TFC’s real rival. A rivalry with roots in both football and a history of social and political anomosities on both sides. The foolishness with Columbus is just ill feeling and friction because of incidents at a few matches.

River Plate is an A-team in South America (that really sucked last year).
But it’s a fact that they did play their reserves (or B-team) in a meaningless match (for them) last week against TFC.
TFC could not beat them says a lot about the MLS “A”-team.

Ah! OK.
Ali Gerba (new aquisition, future forward star)

Chad Barrett
Marco Velez

The key is growth margins went in the right direction, unit volume increased quarter on quarter, and expenses came down. We threw off over $300 million in cash. All of those were in the right direction. So I think we’re on our way.
