T-5 Days: Meet the stadium
By: Sam | April 2nd, 2007
Going into the home stretch before the season final-fricking-ly starts on April 7, I’ll be providing a daily look at what the team is looking like coming into the inaugral campaign. Today’s feature: A quick look at Toronto FC’s home stadium.
BMO (pronounced Beemo) Field was originally planned to lure the FIFA U-20 World Cup to Canada. It did. Oh, thought the City of Toronto, we might as well get a MLS franchise to go along with it. They did. At first to be situated on the York University campus, it was moved to Exhibition Place when the university backed out. Just about finished now, it will also be the Canada National Team’s official stadium, as well as the rugby team.
Slated to have the first TFC match at home on April 28 against Sir Mo’s old team, the Wizards, the pitch is made out of FieldTurf, not natural grass. Seating 20 000, the design is quite nice. On one side, there’s a big T O R O N T O made out of white seats amidst a sea of red ones, with a Canadian flag on top.
With soccer-specific stadiums being the MLS’s intensely-first priority these days, it looks like we got them on our side. Time will tell if the fans can live up to the stadium’s niceness.
