TFC …could be adding a Canadian Coach to Team
By: nicholas | April 6th, 2008Toronto FC could add its first Canadian-born coach as soon as next week, Sun Media has learned.
Talks are taking place to lure Canada’s under-23 coach, Nick Dasovic, to TFC as an assistant to John Carver. Dasovic came within one game of getting his squad qualified for this summer’s Olympics Games in Beijing.
The U-23 side lost 3-0 to the U.S. after defeating Guatemala 5-0 and drawing with Mexico 1-1 in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying last month.
Sources within the TFC hierarchy said yesterday the team felt it was important to get a Canadian coach for the MLS side.
“Right now we have two English coaches (Carver and Paul Winsper),” the source said.
“We would really like to get a Canadian and Nick has the experience that’s needed for the job.”
TFC has been impressed with how both Andrea Lombardo and Tyler Hemming improved under Dasovic’s tutelage on the U-23 squad.
Dasovic shares an agent, Barry MacLean, with TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston. The 39-year-old Dasovic is a native of Vancouver but has played professionally overseas — six seasons with Scottish first division side St. Johnstone FC — as well as three seasons with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the United Soccer League, where he was also an assistant coach before taking over the U-23 team this past season.
