The Jinx of Rob and Colman

By: Colman | July 23rd, 2008

Well, we’re out. We were not able to beat our competition from the USL in order to qualify for the Concacaf Champions League. However, I again refuse to title this blog post “Doom and Gloom”. I will also not blame John Carver (as so many TFC fans are today). I really don’t see how last night’s game is his fault. In fact, I commend him for bringing on Julius James up front - a great tactical move, since we were only playing in high balls and JJ has the best vertical on the team. Et voila, he hit the post. I suppose I could play the players, especially the man who has had to move his stuff from the senior team’s locker room to the reserve squad’s, Jeff Cunningham. #99 had the audacity to be unable to score from a meter away after JJ’s header came to his feet off the post.

No, instead I take the blame for this current winless streak. Since Rob and I started posting here, things have gone decidedly pear-shaped on the field. I know that I jinxed the boys before the game against San Jose, and I’m still kicking myself for it (predicting a relatively easy win). But I tried so hard. I wore my Dichio shirt instead of my Velez (which hasn’t brought me much luck lately). I had five scarves with me. Heck, my superlame section even stood for the last 10 minutes (as did the rest of the stadium). But we could not eke out a goal. Instead, we had to watch Monteal celebrate on our field leave the second the final whistle blew.

While I’m not up to getting into the nitty gritty of the game right now, I will comment on John Carver’s post game comments about Jeff Cunningham and Marvell Wynne.

“You want my honest opinion on that? I am thinking, ‘How did he score 99 goals?’ That’s what I thought.’”

People are saying that JC (the coaching one) should have kept that private. I disagree. I think it’s time for Cunningham to really start hearing it. He is much too concerned about goal #100, and much too little about the team’s achievements. I have no problem with the coach calling out a player in public, especially after a hard loss tie like yesterday.

While he was more subtle about Marvell Wynne, I again agree with him. Wynne is among my favourite players on TFC, but he is near worthless in the final third. In order to be a successful fullback, you need to be one of the better crossers on your team (ie. Jim Brennan). Wynne is not able to swing in good crosses. Ever. However, I give him credit, as he at least tried to take the ball into the box from the wing yesterday instead of crossing. No luck though. Either way, he’s off to Beijing along with Edu. Booya. Not. Who will play? My guess is Nana Attakora-Gyan, as he was tried at rightback in the two international friendlies, and did quite well in my opinion. Edu will likely be replaced by Rosenlund, who hasn’t wowed me so far, but he’ll have to do.

Anyways, time to focus on getting a playoff spot. It starts on Monday night in Salt Lake, first place in the West. We will need to find our groove (and a striker) before the stretch drive. While I would not see us missing the playoffs as a complete and utter failure, I think it is within our possibilities after the way we started the season.

Allstar game tomorrow. Jimmy apparently starting. Watch him get injured (Jinx of Rob and Colman in play again??) I’ll put out a writeup of that affair on Friday. Until then!

Right Idea(s) last night, poor, poor execution. A lot of good attempts at creating space went to waste and ,imo, poor communication out there. Lucky to not have gone down 2-1, even more unlucky to have hit the wood work

Quick question… does anyone know if tomorrow’s protest against the Argos is still taking place? Read about it a while back, haven’t heard anything about it since. I will support the cause if it is still on.

Paolo - Yes the protest is still on. However, I personally do not think that it will be effective in the least. Why, you ask? Because we announced it too early. MLS knew we were wearing black, so they made their jerseys black. When we noticed this a week ago, I suggested that we should change the protest to staying out of our seats (closing off the south end) for the first 15 minutes. This type of protest is often seen in Europe and is very effective imo. However, I was told that it was too late to make a change. Oh well. I will wear black to BMO tomorrow night. I don’t really care who wins, I just want to see some good footy. Protest or not.

I would protest having a shit team and shit owners. The high school stadium becoming a CFL home is the least of your worries.

Canada has a SSS that our national team can play out of. It’s in Montreal and has grass.

G-man! - the team is not shit. We’re going through a tough stretch. I would respectfully disagree that a)BMO is a high school stadium. Its exactly what we need. 20000 seats, not too expensive to build, great sightlines. Montreal? They dont even fill their 10000 seater, no matter how nice its grass is.

Pasquale - yes, yes, very nice, well done. But hey (I know I’m looking for scraps here) - is it just my impression or did we beat you at your house and tie at home? So who’s better? Huh? Huh? ;)

I’m with you on alot of your post Colman. My #1 pet peeve is internet/armchair quarterbacks/coaches etc … and it seems Toronto has the highest population of them. We turn our backs on our teams/coaches/players the second things go from good to bad. There are so many factors playing into why the team is where it is right now and to single anyone or thing out is pretty unfair IMO. I think Carver has been a great addition to the team/city and wouldn’t trade is passion and dedication to a sport and team he has been a part of for half a season for anyone.

    Thanks for the info!

TFC is in its 2nd year. There are not very many upstart franchises who do well immediately. I think they are doing just fine for the time being. It’s pretty ignorant to be calling them shit at this point. Had they been around 8-12 years, sure make fun all you want. I am not huge on the fact that they are owned by MLSE though.

As for the Beem, what more do you need? 20000+ seats, beer and some of the best supporters you’ll find in North America. I heard a $62 Million upgrade to the stadium was apporved. Not sure if there is any truth to that though. I just hope that doesn’t imply the Argos will be using it as well.

Montreal has a 13,500 seater stadium, which is always near-capacity (12,000 tickets sold for every home game, the only time less than 10,000 have shown up was when there was a serious downpour). Keep in mind we’re USL1, not MLS…we’re still doing better than Kansas and Columbus attendance-wise.

I can’t agree with G-man. Calling BMO field a high school stadium and saying TFC is a shit team is pretty low. As someone else pointed out, Montreal has never beaten TFC. But to be fair, what do you call a team that’s never beaten TFC? Canadian Champions.

Still, I’m looking forward to next year. We’ll see what happens then.

As for TFC fans being the best supporters in North America, you forgot to include Mexico. Take a trip to Azteca stadium for an America-Chivas match. Then you’ll see what supporters are like.
