Time For the MLS SuperDraft, Plus Injury Updates

It’s been a bit quiet lately on the TFC newsfront. The MLS Combine began on Saturday, so most of the staff is down in Florida checking out the young players on display. Tomorrow is the big MLS SuperDraft. It starts at Noon ET and will be on GolTV if you want to watch. I will be covering it live on twitter, so you can follow me there for up to date news. Toronto FC don’t have a pick until the 2nd Round; our first will be the 26th overall pick. We also have the 42nd and 43rd overall picks. Not great, but that just means we have to look harder for that diamond in the rough. TFC will not be using the SuperDraft as the basis for building the team though. They have stated that they will be focusing on developing the young talent within the TFC Academy so that we can produce our own players to supplement our squad. The focus on homegrown talent and players that will be playing together in the style that the club eventually want is a positive step forward. I suspect that with little emphasis on the draft we will also be seeing some transfer dealings and trades happen after the draft and hopefully before training camp starts in a couple of weeks.

With the preseason coming just around the corner, it would be the perfect time for some players to pick up injuries wouldn’t it? Julian de Guzman has undergone knee surgery for an injury he has been struggling with for a couple of months now. We don’t know how long he’ll be out for, but he probably won’t be joining the team for the preseason matches in Turkey next month. To make things worse, Nicholas Lindsay was recently involved in an snowmobile accident and will be out for the whole of 2011. Apparently the club management have dealt with him behind the scenes about engaging in risky activities that has subsequently caused him injury. It’s a big blow for us seeing as he was one of our first Academy signings and he was looking decent in the games he played in last season. Hopefully he’ll recover well, but missing out on the whole season is a major setback, for him and the club.

There is still a bit of a question mark surrounding De Ro at the moment. The latest rumours are that he may be able to go out on loan to Celtic. The club is keeping things very quiet and there has been no clear indication from Celtic what they plan on doing. This should be cleared up before preseason, though we may not hear anything until we see him training with the rest of the squad. If he does end up going on loan, I don’t think it is a bad idea for him and I’m sure there won’t be too many people upset with his decision. I just hope he comes out soon to clarify all of the speculation and misunderstandings there have been surrounding him this past month.

Hopefully I’ll be back soon with good news from the SuperDraft tomorrow.

I can’t tell if I’ve bought in to the hype, but I’m pretty excited about the draft, as you may have noticed from my multiple posts.

    Picking 26th? Good thing it’s a deep draft… hah.

If DeRo goes on loan I doubt he will have time to adapt to the “Total Football” strategy to be employed in training camp. Oh well, I’m sure he will just play “Total DeRo Football” anyway, so it probably doesn’t matter if he misses out. I have a feeling we won’t be seeing much more of him around TFC in the future. If he comes back this season they should try to cash in on him and find a younger replacement that will fit in with the system.

We, on the other hand, have three picks in the top 20. I’m interested to see who we take with your 8th pick.

Well, that was weird. I was surprised at your pick at 26th, though if anyone this deep in the draft makes an MLS squad they’re pretty lucky.

Yeah, it looks like we’re focusing more on allocation money and go find new players. I hope it works out. How do you feel about your picks?

More allocation money coming with Chad Barrett going to LA. I’ll have a post up about all the draft stuff later.
