Toronto Acquires Tyrone Marshall from Galaxy!

By: Sam | June 13th, 2007

tyrone-marshall.jpgWell, there’s pretty much no other team in the MLS that we haven’t done business with yet. The latest victims of the Trade-o-tron aka Mo Johnston are no other than the Los Angeles Galaxy, whom we already shook hands with, sending Nate Jacqua over to Tinseltown the second we took him in the expansion draft.

This time, it’s something apparently more fruitful. In exchange for experienced-yet-inconsistent striker Edson Buddle for veteran and Jamaica international Tyrone Marshall.

In my humble opinion? A great trade! As underlined by many bloggers, this will allow Jim Brennan to move over to the left side, and put the young Boyens on the bench to hopefully play with the developmental team, however stellar he has been in the past handful of games.

Marshall, a 10-year vet of the league, also has four dozen caps with the Reggae Boyz and was for a long time the best defender on the Gals’ roster. This year, though, he’s known for the guy who mauled Kenny Cooper of FC Dallas, and who as a result, won’t be playing with his new club this weekend after being suspended.

Mo stressed the fact (once again) that they were unhappy to see Edson Buddle go, after the five starts and two assists he garnered in his stay with TFC.

What do you think?

Most people out there are saying the new lineup will look like this:

    Cunningham Dichio

    Brennan Robinson Edu O’Brien

    Goldthwaite Boyens Marshall Wynne

    Sutton

Therefore the person replacing Buddle on the bench is Andy Welsh, not Andrew Boyens. Since Brennan is moving to left midfield according to Mo, Welsh -> Bench looks like the obvious move, especially as Boyens is really coming into form lately.

Overall, great trade. Allstar defender for bench player, who will soon be replaced by Collin Samuel.

Yeah, I agree that Jim Brennan originally was supposed to play mid. I’m not sure that Mo has given up on the idea of leaving him there, I know I haven’t, because this just makes my mouth water:

    Goldthwaite Brennan Marshall Wynne

what started as a crap line could now be the best in the league

Brennan has been a rock at the back. I know the left wing is probably his preferred position, But I would be dissapointed to see him move up. By far our best defender this season, and team MVP as a centre back, IMO.

Is there any chance that some bright spark out there can come up with a nick name / chant name for TFC other than TFC?

In the UK, Arsenal are called ‘The Gunners’ West Ham is called ‘The Hammers’ and even Liverpool supporters come up with a chant (not very imaginative I agree) of ‘Go on you Reds’ and come up wonderful sing songs like ‘You’ll never walk alone’ (again not very imaginative I know) which all help to give Liverpool their own unique sense of identity etc etc.
Somehow it does not site quite right with me to go to a Toronto FC game and yell out ‘TFC’ ‘TFC’ ‘TFC’ I feel like I am ordering a bucket of Chicken from KFC! Surely we can be a bit more original that TFC! Is there no other name or grouping of letters which we can use that help give Toronto a unique identity of its own??

    The thing is Raouf:
The nicknames in the UK are all part of tradition, they’re all names that came to be over the years with the supporters, the stadium, everything. Some people are calling TFC “the Reds”, but I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if someone in the office decides what the name is going to be like they tend to do in North America.
