USA international set to get injured with Toronto

By: Sam | February 8th, 2007

004-conor-casey.jpgAccording to a few websites, USA international striker Conor Casey is going to sign a contract with the good guys in the next few days. The Colorado (according to Wikipedia) or New Hampshire (Yanks Abroad) native had a slightly unsuccesful spell with Borussia Dortmund, Hannover 96 and Mainz in Germany. Also sidelined twice for injuries on international duties, he wanted to be transferred last month, but he didn’t get his wish, and not being tops on Mainz manager Jürgen Klopp’s list, he opted to return to his home country. I mean continent.

According to a Toronto FC fan site, this would be the “American international striker with a strong reputation” that Mo Johnston hinted towards last week.

Casey, who enjoyed a very impressive college stint with the University of Portland Pilots, highlighted by Soccer America Freshman of the Year award in 1999. The next year, he led the NCAA in scoring with a slightly satisfactory 23 goals.

So what can we expect from Casey at BMO Field? Goals? More underachieving? Benchwarming?

If he is healthy Casey will be a great addition to the team. He is a big player with a cannon of a shot. The big question is whether his ACL will hold up. He is probably worth the gamble. He is only 25.

I’m hoping his ACL does hold up. Casey was in a situation (Mainz) with a coach that did not like him playing for the national team and, in my estimation, harbored some resentment for that. Granted, he has had injury questions, but most players that play in the Bundesliga are somewhat above skill wise than MLS players. When he does stay healthy and actually gets into games for more than 10 or 15 mintues as in Mainz, he will prove to be a hard working forward in the same mold as McBride.
