Well Well Welsh: Andy inks a contract, Iain Hume on his way home (not), TFC draws with USA U-17s

By: Sam | March 13th, 2007

welsh.jpgNews thing number one: Sunderland’s Andy Welsh has signed a contract with Toronto FC. Soccer America reported that this was the acquisition of the left-sided England-based player Toronto had been going on about. Mo Johnston said that he was “real excited to have him. He’s a good young player that I think will really open a lot of people’s eyes.” The Manchester native was on loan with Leicester City.

News thing number two: Iain Hume, the young and restless Canadian international, is coming home to play with TFC. No, that’s of course not true. If football-rumours.com has any authenticity, it probably bought it at the dollar store. Gracias to Jesse at TfcMls.Blogspot.com for the tip.

News thing number three: Toronto finished their exhibition match with the USA U-17 team on Monday on a 0-0 draw. With notable injuries to Marco Reda, Conor Casey, Abbe Ibrahim and Ronnie O’Brien, this result was not a travesty, seeing as Andrea Lombardo’s shot hit the post thrice, Edson Buddle had a goal called back, Alecko Eskandarian needed the keeper to make a great save to deny his header, and Hunter West narrowly missed late in the game, according to TFC’s press release.

Next game: Tomorrow against Notre Dame.

I know it’s preseason and all, but drawing with a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds kind of scares me. And in all reality, hasn’t Ronnie O’Brien always had injury issues? I’m really not sure I’m looking forward to having him on the squad. Hopefully he get’s fit and stays fit.

Yeah, well they’re trying out everyone they can. Ronnie O’Brien is always injured, yes, alongside half of TFC’s squad. I don’t know what the situation will be like come the start of the season, but it’s our first preseason, so as much as youngsters need to find their legs here, it’s important that the will-be starters find their chemistry as well. Which is why we need O’Brien, Welsh, and Casey to be fit.
